Complex Trinomials

  • What is Complex Trinomial? A trinomial which starts with a coefficent that is not equal to one, for example 3x²+7x+1. The method used to factor trinomials of the form ax²+bx+c is Trial and Error. For Trial Error we have to think and see which 2 number multiply to give you ac and 2 numbers that add to give you the b value.

  • Steps:

  1. 1st two numbers in the brackets are factors of 'a' value

  2. Last two number in the brackets are 'c' value

  3. If you multiply the second term in the first bracket with the first term in the second bracket plus we multiply the first term in the first bracket and second term in the second bracket and we add them up and get our 'b' value. Therefore, it is a Complex Trinomial
