To calculate First Differences you need to subtract the second y value from the first y value. If the differences remain the same it means the pattern is Linear. If the First Differences are not constant you need to find your Second Differences. If the Second Differences are the same it means the pattern is Quadratic. If First and Second Differences aren't the same it means the relation is Neither Linear or Quadratic. There are examples shown below.
The First Differences are the same. Therefore, the relation is Linear.
The Second Differences are the same. Therefore. the relation is Quadratic
The First or Second Differences are not the same. Therefore, the relation is Neither
